Atherton: El Camino Real closed for up to four hours following fatal crash

A portion of El Camino Real in Atherton is closed this morning, following a fatal crash where a driver struck a homeless man walking across the street, according to police.
Lt. Joe Wade said the driver of the car has not been arrested at this point and has agreed to voluntarily take a sobriety test. The accident occurred on El Camino Real at Watkins Avenue, near Menlo College, about 6:15 a.m.
El Camino Real are closed between Atherton and Encinal avenues, possibly until 11 a.m.
About 7 a.m., traffic began backing up in the area, as the road is a main thoroughfare to get onto U.S. Highway 101.

ReplyDeleteIn the vein of this discussion the other very dangerous intersection where there have been multiple accidents is The Alameda and Stockbridge Ave. Seems like it may be time to clean a few of these areas up.

Once again this tragic accident was southbound on ECR just south of the Isabella crosswalk where last month's bicyclist fatality occurred. I believe a good start in trying to get something done would be to contact Jackie Speier and Anna Eshoo. I imagine the issue might be of some concern to Ms. Eshoo considering her time residing on Isabella. I may have a chance to speak with Senator Leland Yee tomorrow night, and I plan to ask him his thoughts on how to get something started to remedy this issue.

I think signs in either direction along El Camino warning motorists of an upcoming crosswalk plus those blinking lights that flash across the road (like there are on Alejandra at the Menlo tennis courts) and which can be activated by pedestrians starting to cross, would go a long way in preventing these accidents.
ReplyDeleteI think a number of good ideas are coming up about how to make this corridor safer. In the meantime, it is as it is, so I want to encourage everyone to redouble their vigilence for their own personal safety when they walk or ride bike in this area, and to teach their children to do so as well. No matter who is at fault, the pedestrian or bicyclist will "lose" if hit by a vehicle, so we must individually be extremely defensive walkers and riders regardless of what the speed limits, etc., are. Be careful out there!
